Cuban writer and journalist Grethel Delgado has recently released her novel, “Don’t talk to me about Cuba,” offering readers a deep dive into the complexities of Cuban experiences. The book, published by Suburbano Ediciones, was officially launched on November 16, 2022, at the Miami Book Fair and is now available on Amazon.
In her novel, Delgado explores the emotional journey of Gertrudis, the protagonist, as she returns to Cuba after six years of living in Miami. Through Gertrudis’ story, Delgado delves into the challenges faced by individuals who left their homeland and confronts the harsh realities of a country marked by stagnation and brokenness.
Drawing inspiration from her own experiences and those of fellow Cubans, Delgado skillfully intertwines fiction and reality. Her portrayal of Havana highlights the city’s wounded nature, haunted by memories and ghosts that span both sides of the Florida Strait.
The novel’s title, “Don’t talk to me about Cuba,” captures the enduring pain and struggle faced by Cubans, symbolizing long goodbyes at airports and the longing for freedom. Delgado pays homage to Cuban writer Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda by naming her main character after her, adding a personal touch to the narrative while addressing the broader Cuban experience.
Delgado expresses gratitude for the editing process, guided by Peruvian writer Pedro Medina, and the contributions of Argentine writer Gastón Virkel in designing an aesthetically appealing cover. The book was presented during a debate on November 16, where Delgado engaged with other authors and editors, facilitated by the Hablemos, writers initiative led by Mexican writer and academic Adriana Pacheco. This platform offers female writers a space to connect, learn, and share their literary journeys.
